Why India?

As we have an offshore branch in Hyderabad and also colleagues located in Bangalore, some of our colleagues regularly travel back and forth. As a result, we realize how big of an impact we can make for these schools. Even the most basic essentials can not be taken for granted and famine is still a big issue. Needless to say that this initiative lies close to our hearts.

Objective of supporting these schools

The schooling system is quite different in India (especially in hi-tech urban cities like Bangalore) when compared to western countries. Most of the schooling systems are ‘private’ and people who can accommodate to pay fees are able to afford the private schools. The school fees in these private schools vary based on every income level and provide the facilities in accordance. However, the bottom sector in the economic pyramid cannot afford either school fees or cater to regular schooling costs. Impoverished people with very meager or no income are often sending their children to public schools.

The public schools do not take school fee and provide
– mid-day meals every day
– 1 set of uniform clothing (per year)
– free textbooks

The encouraging factor for parents to send their children to public schools is mid-day meals (1 afternoon meal in school) because many children are not privileged to have 2 meals per day in their day-to-day life. The families come from various working backgrounds such as migration workers, daily-wage laborers, and many others who fall under economically very poor earnings.

Hence, it becomes our responsibility to support such schools that need a lot of assistance in various sections such as infrastructure, filling the gaps in the education facilities, and motivating these children to come to school, get a decent education and become educated, transforming them to moral citizens of the society.

What did we do exactly?

We supplied multiple items to the schools that will be used on a daily basis. An audio assembly kit that will help both children and teachers with training.

As part of the nutrition program, the government supplies ‘eggs’ (1 egg for 1 kid) to the public schools. However, as these eggs are raw, the children weren’t consuming them, and the eggs were going bad. This was highly inefficient. Hence, provided the schools with cooking utensils and a big stove (boiler) that can be used to boil the eggs & provide them to the children.

Additionally, we wanted to create environmental awareness. As we believe it is crucial to enable proper education for the children in those regions, we invited a specialist to educate the children about agriculture. On top of that, we contributed around 100 pots along with plants for the children to turn what they learned into practice. The children planted the plants on the day of the event.

To inspire the creativity of the children, we gave the children drawing material and set up a drawing competition. The top 10 drawings were been rewarded with a price. We organized workshops to teach the children about agriculture and so on as we believe it is crucial to enable proper education for kids in those regions.

Amista also provided a delicious snack for the children and lunch for 50+ people (teachers, staff and helpers) from the 3 schools.
