Jan De Roeck is SAP Cloud Innovation Consultant. He started his career at Amista with an internship and immediately joined us after he graduated. We asked him: 'Why do you like working for our company?'. He decided to write a blog about it and we are proud to share it.
“A year after starting as an SAP Consultant at Amista, I thought it would be interesting to look back at my life as a student and how I ended up with this job. The projects that happened in the past year have boosted my knowledge and experience because Amista gave me great opportunities to prove myself. There are some important lessons I learned on the way. I don’t regret any of the choices I made during my studies and I’m glad I made them.
When I graduated high school in 2013 with a degree in Math & Sciences, I enrolled for Industrial Engineer IT in Ghent. At the end of September 2013, I started my daily commute to Ghent. After 2 months, however, I realized that I was quickly bored by the physics, chemistry and engineering classes. I found out that I could get back my enrollment fee and my study points. Within a week at the beginning of November 2013, I changed from Industrial Engineer IT to Applied Informatics in Antwerp at AP Hogeschool.
When starting with my degree in Applied Informatics I had no programming experience whatsoever. In the beginning, it was tough to catch up on the 2.5 months of classes that I missed. But other students helped me to get up to speed. In September 2016 I started my internship at Amista. I was given a concept without a super detailed description. This was a challenge in the beginning as I was not always sure on what decisions I should make. After receiving constructive feedback from my team lead, I started to get more confidence. During my internship, I didn’t just learn programming skills. I improved my soft skills and business knowledge, two things that are super important in SAP Consulting.
The thing I’ve liked about Amista since I started my internship up until this very moment, is that there is a very healthy combination of junior, medior and senior consultants. Everyone is very open to one another. There is the mentality coming from everybody to get to the next level as a team. As an employee, you get a lot of freedom and suggestions are greatly appreciated. All this has made me enjoy this job since the day I started my internship.
Nowadays I enjoy developing on SAP Cloud Platform in SAPUI5 and HANA. These two technologies allow me to create full stack applications in the cloud, accessible on any device. Thanks to the SAP HANA experience I acquired, the management team is giving me the opportunity to travel to our offshore company in India next week to give our Indian colleagues a HANA training. I'm very excited and honored to be responsible for it. In the future, I want to expand my knowledge on other services offered by SAP Cloud Platform like IoT services and Leonardo machine learning. Currently, I’m working on different projects at one of our biggest customers, this has given me a lot more insight into how big companies function and operate. I hope that during the coming years I can further expand my knowledge with the help of my colleagues.
To conclude, I can say it is quite obvious that this job is challenging me and I really like it!"
